Media Studies Portfolio

After many texts, my group and I decided we wanted to do a suspenseful/ teen drama film opening along the lines of a teenage girl running away from home after she gets some bad news and ending up in danger. We have the main points of what we want to do but still need to figure out the details, like what kind of news lead her to run away and what happens to her then. We know we want the main character to be a teenage girl around 16/17 years old, and she will be the main focus throughout the film opening. Tomorrow in class we will discuss more about this and the details needed. I'll keep you guys posted!

It is time for my group and I to figure out what we are going to do for our film opening: the plot, the characters, the location, EVERYTHING! We have made a group chat in which we are brainstorming ideas on what to do for our film opening. I really wanted to do something with the genre of horror since  horror films are my favorite movies to watch. However, we also wanted to do comedy so we may just mash those 2 things together and make a comedy/ horror film opening. In class, we were able to review last year's portfolio projects, which really inspired and motivated me to make an amazing film intro. I want this film opening to be something no one else has ever done and leave everyone wanting more. I am going to continue to research about these 2 genres (comedy and horror) and see what I come up with. Talk to you guys soon!

There is no argument in saying that Latino actors have made many amazing films; however, sometimes they are not represented or portrayed in the best way. It seems that Hollywood loves Latinos as janitors and maids. Jennifer Lopez, although born in New York, she is daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants and has made a career for herself with many different roles in movies. One such role, is the one she played in the movie "Maid in Manhattan". Lopez plays the role of a maid in a luxurious hotel, along with other Latino actresses.  These kind of movies make it seem as if Latino women are only capable of working as a maid or just being good for cleaning, when obviously that is not the case. There are cliques, stereotypes, “teen issues” (peer pressure, being the outcast, hating life). The main setting is usually a high school. Main character usually narrates the film, allowing audience to understand what the character is feeling and thinking throughout the movie.   Genre conventions (production techniques): dull lighting (portrays gritty and bleak nature), closeup of characters, low angle and high angle shots (to portray strengths and weaknesses amongst characters), clear shots and angles show different groups within the cast.
